With only <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thejakartapost.com\/channel\/election-watch\" target=\"_blank\">19% of votes<\/a> (they needed 20% of seats in the legislature or 25% of the popular votes to nominate a presidential candidate), the party might have to cut a deal with others to ensure a shot for Jokowi at the July election. Over at New Mandala\u2019s Indonesia Votes section, <a href=\"http:\/\/asiapacific.anu.edu.au\/newmandala\/2014\/04\/11\/the-2014-parliamentary-elections-preliminary-lessons-for-political-scientists-pollsters-and-candidates\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marcus Mietzner<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/asiapacific.anu.edu.au\/newmandala\/2014\/04\/10\/why-was-the-jokowi-effect-limited\/\" target=\"_blank\">Edward Aspinall<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/asiapacific.anu.edu.au\/newmandala\/2014\/04\/10\/the-jokowi-effect-no-breakthrough-against-oligarchy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wimar Witoelar<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/asiapacific.anu.edu.au\/newmandala\/2014\/04\/10\/over-reading-the-presidential-effect\/\" target=\"_blank\">David Willis<\/a> share their post-election analysis on PDI-P and the limited \u2018Jokowi effect\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Shifting to broader strategy-related items, this week\u2019s podcasts are courtesy of the ANU. First, a <a href=\"http:\/\/ips.cap.anu.edu.au\/news-events\/podcasts\/robert-oneill-war-studies-lecture-syria-scotland-geopolitics-todays-world#.U0crp6iSyLB\" target=\"_blank\">recent public lecture by Professor Sir Hew Strachan<\/a> in which he made the argument that an emphasis on national interests, defined in terms of geopolitics, can run counter to our ideological commitments. Second, a panel discussion featuring some of Australia and Asia\u2019s leading scholars on whether <a href=\"http:\/\/ips.cap.anu.edu.au\/news-events\/podcasts\/asia-today-1914-redux#.U0dU_6iSzq9\" target=\"_blank\">East Asia risks being brought to the brink of war as Europe was in 1914<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sticking with the Asia Pacific, Japan has pushed ahead with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/04\/10\/world\/asia\/japan-pushes-plan-to-stockpile-plutonium-despite-proliferation-risks.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">plans to stockpile plutonium<\/a>, although not of a grade most desirable for bombs. The stockpile is being used for a nuclear recycling program designed to reuse plutonium as part of an overall plan to reduce Japan\u2019s dependence on external energy sources. The Americans are reportedly unhappy with Tokyo\u2019s stockpiling intentions, for fear of the material being stolen and used by terrorists. For more on the controversy around the plan and Japan\u2019s history of nuclear energy, read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/04\/10\/world\/asia\/japan-pushes-plan-to-stockpile-plutonium-despite-proliferation-risks.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">this <i>New York Times<\/i> piece<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Moving to the Middle East, with Iran entering a <a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2014\/04\/08\/new-round-iran-nuke-talks\/\" target=\"_blank\">third round of nuclear talks with world powers<\/a> this week, CSIS has produced a <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/87905376\" target=\"_blank\">3-minute animated video<\/a> explaining Iran\u2019s missile capabilities, with analysis and narration by Anthony Cordesman.<\/p>\n<p>Turning now to technology and conflict, there\u2019s a new exhibit at the United Nations that <a href=\"http:\/\/9to5mac.com\/2014\/03\/31\/united-nations-uses-ibeacons-to-simulate-a-minefield-raise-awareness-at-ny-museum\/\" target=\"_blank\">simulates walking around landmines<\/a>. It uses a low-energy Bluetooth technology to find a phone\u2019s location and transmitters hidden throughout the exhibit. When a person comes too close to a transmitter, it acts as a landmine and detonates, filling the user\u2019s headphones with a jarring, visceral explosion followed by an audio testimony of someone\u2019s actual experience.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, if you\u2019re in Perth, there\u2019s a special art exhibition commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) <a href=\"http:\/\/news.defence.gov.au\/2014\/04\/09\/out-of-the-shadows-sasr-golden-jubilee-art-exhibition-opens-at-the-western-australian-museum\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018Out of the Shadows\u2019<\/a> on display at the Western Australia Museum. \u2018Out of the Shadows\u2019 runs from Saturday 12 April to Sunday 1 June and offers a glimpse into the world of Australia\u2019s special forces.
