Nielsen writes<\/a>\u00a0on <em>Monkey Cage<\/em> blog that ISIS&#8217; ideology puts the group at odds with norms of Westphalian sovereignty. Demolishing political borders between Syria and Iraq appears to be in keeping with their jihad on the concepts of international relations.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3xDdnAoMTHY\" target=\"_blank\">Audrey Kurth Cronin argues<\/a> that ISIS behaves\u00a0more like a \u2018proto-state\u2019 and, in policy terms, that means counterterrorism frameworks are \u2018ill-suited\u2019. (And for those with a\u00a0<em>Foreign Affairs<\/em> subscription, Kurth Cronin&#8217;s essay, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foreignaffairs.com\/articles\/143043\/audrey-kurth-cronin\/isis-is-not-a-terrorist-group\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018ISIS is not a terrorist group&#8217;<\/a>, expands on the important differences between organisations like al-Qaeda and ISIS.) Cronin\u2019s assessment is a counterpoint to that of the Obama Administration: on Tuesday the President emphasised the \u2018t\u2019-word in refererring to ISIS <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/the-press-office\/2015\/02\/18\/remarks-president-closing-summit-countering-violent-extremism\" target=\"_blank\">during this week&#8217;s Summit on Countering Violent Extremism<\/a>\u00a0in Washington.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>While the\u00a0Chan\u2013Sukumaran news\u00a0dominates in Australia, there have been\u00a0other concerning developments in Indonesia such as the ongoing battle between the National Police and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).
