This week marked an exciting and debate-worthy turning point in the relationship between the United States and Cuba, as Barack Obama became the first US president to visit the island nationsince Calvin Coolidge did so in 1928. <\/span>The Atlantic <\/span><\/i>has an interesting piece<\/span><\/a>\u00a0which unpacks\u00a0prominent Cuban blogger (and Castro critic) <\/span>Yoani S\u00e1nchez\u2019s <\/span>take on the trip<\/span><\/a> (English translation <\/span>here<\/span><\/a>). Also worth a look\u00a0is this <\/span>excellent photo essay from <\/span>The New York Times<\/span><\/i><\/a> that examines the vibrancy of life in Havana under Communist rule.<\/span><\/p>\n

After China\u2019s provocations near Indonesia’s\u00a0Natuna Islands this week\u2014claimed as part of Indonesia’s\u00a0EEZ\u2014there\u2019s been plenty of interesting analysis about\u00a0the archipelagic nation’s next moves. Natalie Sambhi discusses Indonesia\u2019s possible responses to Chinese behavior <\/span>over at <\/span>War on the Rocks<\/span><\/i><\/a>, while Aaron Connelly asks whether an agitated Indonesia might take the helm in an ASEAN response to the South China Sea <\/span>at CSIS\u2019s Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative<\/span><\/a>. A powerful piece over at <\/span>The New York Review of Books <\/span><\/i>considers <\/span>the political and cultural climate being fostered in Israel today<\/span><\/a>. It judges that, \u2018Israeli peace activists have graduated from being protesters, in theory, at least, protected by the law, to being dissidents\u2014that is, legitimate targets for government-inspired attacks.\u2019 From the demolition of Palestinian homes and the banning of books through to the occupation of territories and enhanced interrogation methods, the piece paints a bleak picture with some tough facts and tougher judgments.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Centre for a New American Security this week released a report that comes down in favour of creating a Maritime Domain Awareness network in the South China Sea. The authors argue that bringing transparency to the region would do much to reduce the chance of conflict in what is an increasingly contested operating environment. In this week\u2019s installment of the <\/span>Foreign Policy <\/span><\/i>E.R. podcast series<\/span><\/a>, David Rothkopf, Yochi Dreazen, Kori Schake and <\/span>The New York Times\u2019 <\/span><\/i>David Sanger sit down to discuss the timing of President Obama\u2019s trip\u00a0to Cuba, and whether it has set a precedent for the US\u2019s relations with the rest of Latin America (39 mins).<\/span><\/p>\n
