In a sign of Russia\u2019s growing strategic interest in the Arctic region, the country<\/span> floated<\/span><\/a> its new icebreaker last Friday<\/span>\u2014<\/span>the first new icebreaker in almost 45 years. The <\/span>Ilya Muromets<\/span><\/i>\u2014which will join the Northern Fleet in 2017\u2014is an electric-diesel powered icebreaker designed to assist the Russian Navy in icy conditions, escort and tow other ships, and deliver supplies to remote military installations. The 85-metre long ship can cut through one-metre-thick ice and is capable of travelling the entire 5,600km length of the Northern Passage. The Arctic has become a<\/span> priority for Russia<\/span><\/a> in recent years, having<\/span> built several bases<\/span><\/a> and<\/span> conducted war games<\/span><\/a> in the area in addition to<\/span> filing a claim<\/span><\/a> in the UN over a significant part of the region. The country is also building two Arctic corvettes\u2014which will be able to act as icebreakers and armed with cruise missiles\u2014and three nuclear-powered icebreakers, the largest of which<\/span>\u2014<\/span>Arktika<\/span><\/i>\u2014<\/span> will be floated next week<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n During a Defence Committee hearing last week,<\/span> British MPs were told<\/span><\/a> that six British Type 45 destroyers had experienced repeated power outages because the waters of the Persian Gulf were too warm. Representatives from Rolls-Royce and BAE Systems Maritime told the hearing that the failings occurred because the equipment was being operated in<\/span> more arduous conditions than envisaged<\/span><\/a>\u2014<\/span>with waters in the Persian Gulf reaching 32 degrees Celsius. A spokesperson from Britain\u2019s Ministry of Defence has denied this,<\/span> telling CNN<\/span><\/a> that the Type 45 was designed for world-wide operations and is effective in the Gulf and South Atlantic all year round. The <\/span>\u00a31 billion apiece warships are among the world\u2019s most advanced missile destroyers and<\/span> are the backbone of the Royal Navy\u2019s air defence capability<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n Flight Path<\/b><\/p>\n On Thursday last week, one of the Russian Knights aerobatic team\u2019s<\/span> Sukhoi Su-27 fighter jet crashed<\/span><\/a> after an air show near Moscow. At the time, the Russian Defence Ministry<\/span> said<\/span><\/a> that the crash was likely caused by a technical fault and that the pilot diverted away from residential areas but didn\u2019t have time to eject. But over the weekend, a source investigating the cause of the accident told TASS that the pilot<\/span> suffered a stroke<\/span><\/a> during the flight. Following the crash, the Russian air force has<\/span> grounded its entire fleet of Su-27\u2019s<\/span><\/a>\u2014meaning that about half of Russia\u2019s fighter jets can\u2019t take to the air.
