The first features an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redcross.org.au\/files\/IHL_Magazine_Ed_8_-_Weapons_of_War_LOW_RES.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">article on autonomous robots and the automation of warfare<\/a> (PDF) and the second includes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redcross.org.au\/files\/IHL_Magazine_Issue_1_2012.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">one on state control over private military and security companies<\/a> (PDF).<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s been much coverage of China\u2019s new passport that shows disputed areas of the South China Sea as belonging to China. But here\u2019s an author who <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cjicl.org.uk\/index.php\/cjicl-blog\/entry\/passports-or-public-recognition\" target=\"_blank\">analyses<\/a> the Chinese dotted line that appears in the passport from a legal perspective.<\/p>\n<p>Now that the Global War on Terror is seemingly over, the team at <em>Danger Room<\/em> have a piece on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/dangerroom\/2012\/11\/jeh-johnson-terrorism\/\" target=\"_blank\">what the end might look like<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And before we get too excited about the effects of social media on warfare, Nathan Cohen\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rsis.edu.sg\/publications\/Perspective\/RSIS2152012.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">new RSIS paper casts doubt on its impact<\/a> (PDF) during recent violence between Israel and Hamas.<\/p>\n<p><em>Events<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Canberra readers, Hugh White will be giving a public lecture at ANU\u2019s Strategic and Defence Studies Centre on the <a href=\"http:\/\/cog-white.eventbrite.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\">prospects and risks of an alliance between Australia and Japan<\/a>, Tuesday 11 December a 5.30pm. He\u2019ll also be launching the accompanying <em>Centre of Gravity<\/em> policy paper at the event.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Clive Williams will be speaking about the <a href=\"http:\/\/billboard.anu.edu.au\/event_view.asp?id=96937\" target=\"_blank\">causes and implications of \u2018green on blue\u2019 attacks in Afghanistan<\/a> at ANU, Tuesday 11 December at 6pm.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, there\u2019ll be two talks on China\u2019s new leadership at ANU next week.
