With Rim of the Pacific 2016 (Exercise RIMPAC) in full swing,<\/span> Russia has stationed a spy ship<\/span><\/a> off the coast of Hawaii to monitor proceedings. According to a US Pacific Fleet spokesman, the Russian Navy Balzam-class auxiliary general intelligence ship arrived \u2018recently\u2019, operating outside US territorial waters but within the 200-nautical-mile EEZ. Russia hasn\u2019t been invited to the biennial exercise since 2012, due to heightened tension with the West over Moscow\u2019s annexation of Crimea in 2014. The Center for Research on Globalization has<\/span> taken a look at this omission<\/span><\/a>, asking whether RIMPAC\u2019s being used to co-opt China into isolating Russia.<\/span><\/p>\n The US military has<\/span> long been known<\/span><\/a> to use animals to assist in operations, and soon locusts could be added to the list.<\/span> The Office of Naval Research has awarded<\/span><\/a> a team at Washington University a three-year, US$750,000 grant to continue its research into turning locusts into military tools. The insects\u2019 sensory abilities make them ideal candidates; their powerful olfactory system is more sensitive than even state-of-the-art miniaturised chemical sensing devices. During testing, sensors are implanted onto the locusts\u2019 antennae, which records and decode certain neural activity in their brains.<\/span> Researchers plan<\/span><\/a> to hook up sensors to a small \u2018backpack\u2019, containing a transmitter that sends signals to a receiver connected to an LED. If explosives are detected, the LED will light up red. In order to guide locusts to areas that may contain bombs, researchers are working to create a \u2018tattoo\u2019 made from biocompatible silk, which would convert light into heat to direct the insects.<\/span><\/p>\n Flight Path<\/b><\/p>\n Last week, the F-35B short take off\/vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft purchased for the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy<\/span> debuted to the public<\/span><\/a> at the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) in Fairford, England. The UK<\/span> committed to the acquisition<\/span><\/a> of 138 F-35s in its Strategic Defence and Security Review released in November last year, though a number of conventional take-off variants might later be added to the mix. <\/span>The Aviationist <\/span><\/i>has some<\/span> cool footage<\/span><\/a> of the F-35B showing off its hovering and vertical landing skills at the RIAT.
