Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced his <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/cabinet-profiles\/abe-cabinet-formed-august-3-2016\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new cabinet a few days back<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which included the elevation of Tomomi Inada to the defence portfolio, making her the second woman to hold the post. Inada is an up-and-comer in the LDP, known for her nationalist views and as a close confidant and prot\u00e9g\u00e9 of the prime minister. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wall Street Journal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> carries an\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/abe-protege-with-nationalist-views-is-japans-new-defense-minister-1470227684\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">easy profile<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She\u2019ll be one to watch when Abe\u2019s time comes to an end.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some prime cuts on Trump and the presidential circus. And finally, The Simpsons have played their hand (above).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two interesting longer reads on human nature and war this week. The first,<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/war-and-rape\/\" target=\"_blank\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TIME<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, takes an in-depth look at rape in war, \u2018a weapon even more powerful than a bomb or a bullet\u2019. It draws on the first-hand accounts of women living in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and asks how their experiences might be used to counter Daesh\u2019s sexual enslavement of Yezidi women. The second,<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2002\/12\/09\/looking-at-war?mbid=nl_Sunday%20Longreads%20(48)&amp;CNDID=1522473&amp;spMailingID=9277130&amp;spUserID=MTQxMzc2NjcxNjE0S0&amp;spJobID=962366308&amp;spReportId=OTYyMzY2MzA4S0\" target=\"_blank\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New Yorker<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, examines the evolution of war photography, arguing that:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Harrowing photographs do not inevitably lose their power to shock. But they don\u2019t help us much to understand. Narratives can make us understand. Photographs do something else: they haunt us.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Economist<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has published<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/news\/science-and-technology\/21703360-proliferation-quieter-submarines-pushing-navies-concoct-better-ways?cid1=cust\/ednew\/n\/bl\/n\/2016084n\/owned\/n\/n\/nwl\/n\/n\/AP\/n\" target=\"_blank\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an excellent short piece<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the latest arms race\u2014between surface vessels and submarines (with the balance tipping in favour of the latter) as navies around the world rush to develop better methods to track enemy boats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week has seen loads of fresh research offerings from plenty of different areas, kicking off with the massive<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ametsoc.org\/ams\/index.cfm\/publications\/bulletin-of-the-american-meteorological-society-bams\/state-of-the-climate\/\" target=\"_blank\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">State of the Climate report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the American Meteorological Society. Based on the work of 450 scientists from 62 different countries, the report confirms that, yes, the climate is going to hell and taking us with it, with 2015 coming in as the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.climate.gov\/news-features\/features\/2015-state-climate-highlights#wows1_3\" target=\"_blank\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hottest year on record<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2016\/aug\/02\/environment-climate-change-records-broken-international-report\" target=\"_blank\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This primer from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Guardian<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> displays some of the report\u2019s key findings in a series of infographics. From CSIS, a great<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.csis.org\/analysis\/making-choices?block1\" target=\"_blank\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report on the US\u2013Egypt relationship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dives into the shared interests of the two countries and the impact of a closer partnership in today\u2019s Middle East. The bi-monthly<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/iseas.edu.sg\/images\/pdf\/ASEANFocusSChinaSeaArbitration.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ASEAN Focus<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(PDF) is also out, with a special issue focusing on the South China Sea ruling.
