Its first stop was Newport, Rhode Island, where visitors were given a <a href=\"http:\/\/bigstory.ap.org\/article\/5780f73caee642cdbab5e4e7dd83a082\/us-navy-gives-look-inside-futuristic-44b-zumwalt-destroyer\" target=\"_blank\">tour<\/a> of the futuristic destroyer\u2019s bridge, mission centre and armament. The destroyer will visit several other ports along the way\u2014including a stop in Baltimore on 15 October\u2014where it\u2019ll be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.navy.mil\/submit\/display.asp?story_id=96558\" target=\"_blank\">formally commissioned<\/a> into the USN during Fleet Week. USS Zumwalt is the USN\u2019s largest destroyer to date and has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fas.org\/sgp\/crs\/weapons\/RL32109.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">plagued<\/a> by cost and technical issues. The vessel, which boasts a stealthy design that makes it look like a cross between the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.monitorcenter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">USS Monitor<\/a> and the Starship\u00a0Enterprise (yes, that one), is helmed by Captain James Kirk. How <a href=\"http:\/\/www.startrek.com\/article\/happy-50th-anniversary-star-trek\" target=\"_blank\">fitting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In other news from across the Pacific, NATO warships have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/canada\/nato-warships-converge-on-halifax-for-military-exercises-1.3066686\" target=\"_blank\">gathered in Halifax, Canada<\/a> this week for a 13-day <a href=\"http:\/\/ottawacitizen.com\/news\/national\/defence-watch\/photos-french-sub-u-s-and-spanish-ships-arrive-for-exercise-cutlass-fury\" target=\"_blank\">anti-submarine warfare exercise<\/a> dubbed Cutlass Fury. Canada\u2019s largest anti-submarine warfare exercise in 20 years also includes vessels from the US, France, Germany, Spain and the UK. It comes at a time when concern about <a href=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2016\/06\/03\/admiral-warns-russian-subs-waging-cold-war-style-battle-atlantic\" target=\"_blank\">Russia\u2019s resurgent submarine operations<\/a> has been ratcheted up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Flight Path<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Adding to the latest <a href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2016\/04\/18\/politics\/russia-jets-buzz-u-s-ship-rules-of-engagement\/\" target=\"_blank\">series of close encounters<\/a>, last week a Russian fighter jet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/articles\/reports-russian-fighter-jet-came-within-10-feet-of-us-navy-poseidon?utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Navy%20Times%20DNR%206\/7\/16&amp;utm_term=Editorial%20-%20Navy%20-%20Daily%20News%20Roundup\" target=\"_blank\">flew within 10 feet<\/a> of a USN P-8 Poseidon during four intercepts over the Black Sea. According to a Pentagon spokesperson, the \u2018unsafe intercept\u2019 by the Russian SU-27 Flanker fighter took place while the USN aircraft was conducting routine operations in international airspace. <a href=\"https:\/\/news.vice.com\/article\/navy-releases-full-video-footage-of-russian-fighter-jets-buzzing-us-warship-in-the-baltic\" target=\"_blank\">Earlier this year<\/a>, Russian jets buzzed the USS Donald Cook in the Baltic Sea, coming within 30 feet of the warship.<\/p>\n<p>The QF-4 full-scale aerial target drone conducted its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.janes.com\/article\/63288\/usaf-qf-4-target-drone-flies-final-unmanned-mission\" target=\"_blank\">final unmanned mission<\/a> in late August, as part of the final chapter of the F-4\u2019s 50-year history of service with the US. But the QF-4, which is set to be replaced by the QF-16, didn\u2019t go down <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2016\/08\/31\/usaf-qf-4-phantom-is-shot-at-by-an-f-35-with-two-aim-120s-during-last-unmanned-mission-and-survives\/\" target=\"_blank\">without a fight<\/a>. See why the F-4 made the top five all-time fighter list in this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aspistrategist.ru\/aspi-opines-the-real-best-five-fighter-aircraft-of-all-time\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Strategist<\/em> piece.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In F-35 news, Australia\u2019s Defence Industry Minister, Christopher Pyne, will meet with the F-35 Joint Program Office in the US in October to discuss <a href=\"http:\/\/www.janes.com\/article\/63486\/australia-seeks-to-expand-f-35-support-engagement\" target=\"_blank\">turning Australia into<\/a> a maintenance and sustainment hub for Joint Strike Fighter operations.\u00a0 And finally, for an interesting read on the heavy price tag and criticism of the world\u2019s most hi-tech helmet developed for F-35 pilots, check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/news\/science-and-technology\/21706448-worlds-most-expensive-fighter-jet-helmet-really-good-top-gunu2019s\" target=\"_blank\">this piece by <em>The Economist<\/em><\/a> (paywalled)<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rapid Fire<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The US and India will <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sundayguardianlive.com\/news\/6435-india-us-will-hold-military-exercises-near-china-border\" target=\"_blank\">conduct a joint military exercise<\/a> from 14\u201327 September in Uttarakhand, on India\u2019s northern border with China. The exercise is the latest in a series of measures aimed at strengthening US\u2013India defence relations. In April, the two countries signed a <a href=\"http:\/\/thediplomat.com\/2016\/05\/5-reasons-why-india-agreed-to-a-logistics-agreement-with-the-united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\">Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement<\/a>, followed last month by an agreement on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.livemint.com\/Opinion\/Y0BZhiuvqAAtknkP8iPmyO\/Building-USIndia-defence-relations.html\" target=\"_blank\">the provision of military logistics services<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Australian scientists are working on the creation of dynamic camouflage for military vehicles. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/world\/708020\/Future-warfare-hoverbike-drones-invisible-chameleon-tanks-change-colour\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018chameleon tanks\u2019<\/a> are fitted with polycarbonate cells that change colour to blend in with new surroundings. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineersaustralia.org.au\/portal\/news\/colour-change-tech-turns-battle-tanks-chameleons\" target=\"_blank\">colour can be changed on demand<\/a> by switching a small voltage across the cell. The technology was trialled this year at ADF\u2019s Cultana training site in South Australia.<\/p>\n<p>BAE Systems <a href=\"http:\/\/www.australiandefence.com.au\/news\/cv90-ifv-for-land-400-makes-debut\" target=\"_blank\">showcased its bid<\/a> for Land 400 Phase 3 at last week\u2019s Land Forces 2016 Exposition held in Adelaide. The infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) CV90 is an attractive option for Australia, with nine different variants in service and an impressive pedigree of successful engagement in UN and NATO missions worldwide. Rheinmetall have entered a competing bid with its Lynx IFV, presented at Eurosatory 2016 in June (see it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?time_continue=15&amp;v=YeTOBmZ5Kjg\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zero Gravity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NASA is probing things again. In collaboration with Canada, France, Germany, Italy and the UK, it has launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/osiris-rex\/\" target=\"_blank\">OSIRIS-REx<\/a> to hunt down the carbonaceous asteroid 101955 Bennu.\u00a0 Bennu is an ancient asteroid that\u2019s supposed to have formed around the birth of our solar system. NASA aims for OSIRIS-REx to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2016\/09\/watch-nasa-launch-asteroid-sampling-spacecraft\/\" target=\"_blank\">rendezvous with the asteroid<\/a> in 2018, probe its depths and return in 2023 with samples from the surface.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s new space lab\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/english.cctv.com\/2016\/09\/11\/VIDEPG8KYAGqK3nzAAIgLN8u160911.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">Tiangong-2<\/a>\u2014is scheduled to launch this week from the northwest city of Jiuqun. The 20,000 kilogram module can hold three crew members and will be propelled into space by a Longmarch 2-F rocket. The space lab is designed to test China\u2019s ability to transport goods into space, and to conduct large-scale scientific experiments, such as studying gamma ray bursts building on the planned Franco-Chinese <a href=\"http:\/\/spacenews.com\/41479china-france-join-forces-on-astronomy-mission\/\" target=\"_blank\">SVOM missions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Manned space missions only started 65 years ago, and already it appears us humans might be out of a job. Former NASA researcher Dr Phil Metzger has detailed a <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/ftp\/arxiv\/papers\/1609\/1609.00737.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">plan<\/a> for a \u2018Self-sufficient Replicating Space Industry\u2019. The three-stage plan involves sending 12 tons of robots and manufacturing gear to the moon. The robots would mine resources and build up to 150 tons of infrastructure and equipment independently.
