This is the second year that ASPI has run a series<\/a> on The Strategist <\/em>examining Australia\u2019s approach to women, peace and security (WPS) to coincide with International Women\u2019s Day. It\u2019s an important topic that\u2019s frequently overlooked at the expense of what are often deemed \u2018more pressing\u2019 security issues by the media and security commentators.<\/p>\n

But yet again, this year\u2019s series in and of itself showed why issues related to women\u2019s participation, leadership and perspectives are integral to Australia\u2019s national security. Importantly, the series includes an overwhelming number of female authors, who are usually underrepresented in security debates. It\u2019s essential that those perspectives are considered if Australia\u2019s approach to international security issues is to be most effective.<\/p>\n

In 2019, the Australian government is expected to issue Australia\u2019s second National Action Plan (NAP) on WPS. ASPI\u2019s new Strategic Insights paper\u2014Women, peace and security\u2014Addressing the gaps and strengthening implementation<\/a><\/em>\u2014features the articles published in The Strategist <\/em>series. The articles attempt to capture some of the debate regarding what progress has emerged from Australia\u2019s current NAP, the gaps that have been identified and the areas where implementation needs to be strengthened. The paper examines four themes that emerged from the series:<\/p>\n
