If you\u2019ve been following Andrew Davies\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aspistrategist.ru\/graph-of-the-week-why-fleet-size-matters\/\" target=\"_blank\">graphs of the week on the US Navy and fleet size<\/a>, you won\u2019t be surprised.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nuclear security<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With President Obama set to deliver his State of the Union address later today, the team over at <em>Arms Control Wonk<\/em> have distilled the <a href=\"http:\/\/krepon.armscontrolwonk.com\/archive\/3693\/potus-in-situ-for-sotu\" target=\"_blank\">best quotes about nuclear weapons and disarmament from all past SOTU addresses<\/a>, going back to President Harry Truman.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a little inter-blog discussion going on about nuclear superiority, sparked off by Erik Voeten\u2019s post on <em>The Monkey Cage<\/em> which <a href=\"http:\/\/themonkeycage.org\/blog\/2013\/02\/11\/does-nuclear-superiority-matter\/\" target=\"_blank\">questions conventional wisdom on the subject<\/a>, followed by a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whiteoliphaunt.com\/duckofminerva\/2013\/02\/the-politics-of-political-science-mushroom-cloud-edition.html\" target=\"_blank\">response by Daniel Nexon<\/a> over at <em>Duck of Minerva<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Japan<\/strong><strong> and China<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The Diplomat<\/em>\u2019s Trefor Moss argues that, despite a hawkish PM, <a href=\"http:\/\/thediplomat.com\/2013\/02\/10\/7-reasons-china-and-japan-wont-go-to-war\/?all=true\" target=\"_blank\">it\u2019s unlikely Japan will go to war with China<\/a> and gives seven reasons to back that up.<\/p>\n<p>Over at CIMSEC\u2019s blog, Felix Seidler has a piece that asks, <a href=\"http:\/\/cimsec.org\/will-chinas-navy-soon-be-operating-in-the-atlantic\/\" target=\"_blank\">will China\u2019s Navy be operating soon in the Atlantic<\/a>?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cyber security<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>RAND Corporation has a new study out on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rand.org\/pubs\/research_reports\/RR235.html\" target=\"_blank\">how to characterise cyber security threats<\/a>. Meanwhile, NPR has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2013\/02\/11\/171677247\/pentagon-goes-on-the-offensive-against-cyber-attacks\" target=\"_blank\">a segment (transcript included) on the Pentagon\u2019s offensive on cyberattacks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Special operations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Set aside some time for this article by Phil Bronstein about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esquire.com\/print-this\/man-who-shot-osama-bin-laden-0313?page=all\" target=\"_blank\">the man who shot Osama bin Laden<\/a>. This long and often gritty article (warning: this is an earthy piece with some graphic descriptions and language to match) is an intimate look at the shooter\u2019s life, his account of the raid, and his thoughts on <em>Zero Dark Thirty<\/em>. Around those elements, Bronstein weaves a one-sided critique of what\u2019s waiting for the shooter after a life in SEAL Team 6: \u2018Nothing. No pension, no health care, and no protection for himself or his family.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>Irregular warfare<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another worthy longer read is Max Boot\u2019s recent <em>Foreign Affairs<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foreignaffairs.com\/articles\/138824\/max-boot\/the-evolution-of-irregular-war?page=show\" target=\"_blank\">essay on the evolution of irregular warfare<\/a>.
